This is intentional rest with God; it’s a joyful time of worship and rejuvenation.
“You were made for more.”
I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase before. And it’s true! You were made for more. Who you currently are and what you’ve currently done are not the end of you; there is more for your future. More dreaming. More growth. More.
And more rest.
Rest is one of the most important parts of the Christian life. We see this displayed throughout Scripture, starting in Genesis 2:2 with the Creator’s rest and Sabbath, the land rest in Leviticus 25:4, and even reading rest described as a promise in Hebrews 4. Jesus’ life was full of rest, too. He didn’t heal, teach, and save without withdrawing from the crowds to rest. Jesus went to the mountain, the wilderness, the garden, and the boat to get away from his purpose so he could rest. Maybe part of his purpose was to rest?
We also see rest in every part of creation. Through the changing seasons, when everything slows down a bit in the winter, to the dormancy of plants and even volcanoes! Humans have a natural rest rhythm of sleep every single night! But sleep is not the only rest we’re discussing here. It’s the rest we do during our waking hours, when we remember that we were made in the image of God who rested.
Because of this image we bear, rest makes us more of who we are! We become more of who God made us when we rest, because it echoes him.
How do we rest more? The simple answer is a weekly Sabbath, a yearly retreat, and a Sabbatical every seven years. The spiritual rhythm of rest shouldn’t feel like a lazy day or regular vacation. This is intentional rest with God; it’s a joyful time of worship and rejuvenation. This kind of rest is about connecting with God and with your purpose.
You were made for more. More achieving. More growth. And more rest. I pray your future will be full of holy rest as you become more of who God made you to be.
