When we pray for God to order our steps, we give Him permission and authority to govern our actions.
The imagery of God ordering our steps has been on display repeatedly in my mind. For many seasons of my life, I thought the ordering of my steps meant I could always see one step ahead. But as life went on, it seemed like that next step became smaller and invisible. This caused me to believe that God couldn’t be ordering my steps and forging my path.
In our humanity, we often think we’re doing something wrong if we’re unable to see in front of us. Many of us were taught throughout youth and early adulthood that operating without knowing the foreseeable future was unwise and dangerous. From that upbringing, we became obsessed with knowing what’s next, a generation consumed by our calendars and timelines, planning for every detail of our desired life. And when life deviates from that timeline, instead of adjusting and moving forward, we get stuck ruminating over the “failed” plans.
We have become so dependent on seeing and shaping our future that our perceptions and plans have become our idols. That was my truth. I wanted God to walk with me, but didn’t want Him to order my steps. I wanted Him close enough to breathe on my plans and far away enough that He wouldn’t change them. Countless believers probably assume their steps are ordered by the Lord simply because they believe. But belief can only be activated through application.
When we pray for God to order our steps, we give Him permission and authority to govern our actions. Which means we live by His directions, not our own. “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;” (Psalm 37:23 NIV). The support of our steps (actions) is contingent upon our commitment to God. In your journey with God, you will
reach a point when you can no longer see the steps ahead. When your timelines, calendars, and plans fail and expire, remember that God forms steps as we walk and strengthens each step one at a time.
