God Who Restores

When we are empty, He breathes life into us.

There are moments in our lives that stop us in our tracks which we never see coming. Sometimes they’re good things. Sometimes they’re hard things. Sometimes they are circumstances that necessitate our total dependence on God.
The day before my 39th birthday, I had a positive pregnancy test. Our first and second ultrasounds showed an empty gestational sack, no heartbeat, no baby. We were told I would miscarry by a wonderful doctor who shared our sorrow and ached with me. I made the decision to schedule a D&C and avoid the potential complications of a spontaneous miscarriage. When I arrived for an appointment that, unbeknownst to me had been cancelled, my doctor insisted on one more ultrasound. I obliged. Much to my surprise, we found not an empty womb, but twins.
On Mother’s Day, I had sat and listened to a sermon I do not remember. I was grieving a baby I thought would never be. The Holy Spirit whispered over and over, “I am God who restores,” to my heart. When the ultrasound showed twins instead, all I could say through tears and sobs was, “God restores.” Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this kind of very tangible restoration.
God restores life. When we are empty, He breathes life into us. When we are broken, He fills those wounds with the abundant life we have in Christ. Restoration is often a process, not immediate, and not always painless. And as a pregnant mother of 4, I am acutely aware that the next 9 months of restoration will not be easy. But when God restores that which has been lost, it is not without the grace and mercy sufficient to sustain us.
When our souls and hearts are weary, we must remember that God restores. Scripture reiterates over and over that God’s restoration is to abundant life, victory over death, and to the fullness of salvation in Jesus Christ. Never underestimate the restorative power of your perfect Father who loves you and has promised good gifts to His children.
