The most meaningful thing we can do for our friends is to show up with our presence.
Through every stage of my life, friends have come and gone. I have had friends walk beside me through high school, college, marriage, pregnancies, and through my cancer diagnosis. Some of these friends have been with me for the long haul, while others just for a season.
Friendships can connect like an old hat with a perfect fit. While others require a little more finessing, making slight adjustments along the way. It may feel like the effort we put in is not worth it. But the most meaningful thing we can do for our friends is to show up with our presence.
Let’s be honest. It’s hard to make friends in the first place. And if we aren’t careful, we can effortlessly let go of the ones we have now by tuning into the busyness that surrounds our days. Suddenly, we are left wondering why we have ignored those friends who have cared deeply for us in the past.
Sure, maintaining friendships may feel like work, but what a gift to show up like Jesus did –in person. He was always willing to experience life with the community around Him. He never bypassed people because of His schedule. He always showed compassion and love.
Friendships grow out of our willingness to love others, like Christ loves us. Jesus said, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13
Friendships may not always be perfect, but when you give of yourself to help another in need, your energy and time will not go unnoticed.
Today, I encourage you not only to communicate with your friends through social media but to be present with them physically. Will you join me in making lasting connections, as Jesus did?
